On Hasina’s press conference

Some quick thoughts on Hasina’s press conference.

1. Clear message of tolerance and discipline to the party and rank and file.  In 2001, BNP-JI victory was followed by a series of scores-settling.  In the previous five years, BNP leaning people were booted out of every sphere of life, often unjustly.  And in 2001, BNP folks went overboard in reclaiming their turf.  This is independent of the terror inflicted on the marginalised communities across the country.  This happened in university halls, bus stands, government offices, school committees, and local clubs.  In the years since, AL activists have accumulate similar, in fact more, grievances.  But if we witness another series of ‘turf reclamation’ and ’score settling’, then we will be back to 2002.  Reports from Dhaka University are worrying, but Hasina’s categorical message of tolerance is welcome.

2. A lot of talk about South Asian Task Force to fight terror.  What is this beast?  Eita ki khay, na mathai makhe?  Can anyone enlighten us on this?  Political violence — whether in the form of hartal-oborodh or grenade attacks – is something we need to end.  Violence in the name of religion, or directed against the minorities or heterodox views has to stop.  But let’s not get involved in other people’s wars.  We don’t want suicide attacks in Dhaka hotels.

3. Offer of Deputy Speakership, Chairs of Standing Committee to BNP.  This was a part of BNP manifesto, but not AL’s.  But AL still made the offer.  BNP should accept it, and use the committes to probe every appointment and procurement and policy announcements.  If BNP is to regenerate, it cannot afford to give up this opportunity.

4. No clear commitment on the war crimes issue.  Right towards the end, a young journalist asked about war crimes trial.  Hasina replied that ‘people have given their verdict, that’s the biggest justice’.  Then ABM Musa asked the last question, where war crimes trial and Islamic militancy was bracketed, and Hasina replied about the Task Force.

5. (Forgot to add earlier).  Support for democracy and opposition to military rule in Burma and elsewhere.  She made a point about her own incarceration.  We hope that this opposition to military involvement in politics translates into a clear rejection of National Security Council or other similar ideas.

    Jyoti,

    Little correction

    1) Regarding War Criminal her statement was like that

“people have given their verdict, that’s the biggest justice. We will continue the legal process. ”

Respected ABM Musa’s question was same as young reporters

    2) I support task force issue. Keeping Mumbai Incident in mind, Lots of things are Bangladesh is still yet to answers, 21st August Granada attack ,Creators of Bangla Bhai and all should come to light.
Even Mystery of Arms loaded Track on Chittagong route is yet to expose. ISI roll in BD politics is key issue.

So United Task force of south Asia is not only important to find terrorist but also
can give legitimate reply for any wrong allegations

“South Asian Task Force” sounds familiar. It looks as if India will take the lead and I’m sure it’s going to let Indian jawans into Bangladesh. This could hamper AL’s reputation. AL sucks up to India left and right, and the same way Mujibur Rahman try to sell BD to India, Hasina seems to be in the same path.

  5. It’s time to move on in Bangladesh!

Dear People in Bangladesh and Abroad,

I just like to emphasis that it’s time to move on in Bangladesh after landslide win of AL. AL got people’s mandate to work for the people and for the nation and we all should help them to reach that goal. We also should provide constructive criticism if they fall behind of their promises.

This election will be win for the people of Bangladesh if AL can lead the nation in new direction with creating more jobs, developing multiple economy sectors and pay attention on infrastructure spending and create more power generation with exploring more oil and gas. Since cost of food and materials are down in the international market, I won’t expect AL to do anything except to check the local business cartels to follow international price standard.

All of us have to play our role and we will benefit together from the future success. We general people need to clarify to New Govt that corruption won’t be tolerated and those people who will be involved in corruption will pay the price now or after 5 years. This time will be severe since corrupted people won’t get second chance this time to get out of jail anymore like last 2 years.

Well I also believe that Bangladesh will be better served if we stop talking about which party leaders or activists should be jail now. This kind of hate crime against other political parties or grass root political people will create noise on the atmosphere and any noise could hamper the real progress in Bangladesh under the AL Administration.

I like to urge all people in Abroad and Bangladesh to work with newly elected Govt with real enthusiasm to build Bangladesh and change the direction for better future for our new generation.

Expatriates also will able to play greater role in Bangladesh through transferring new technologies, international experiences and expertise, and with new investment in Bangladesh.

God Bless Bangladesh and her 160 million people.

India, India, India, task force/ selling country, India takeover…bla bla.
Don’t you people get it? People are SICK and TIRED of this selling country to INDIA crap and there is no point in continuing this.
As long as AL stabilizes prices, provides electricity, curtails corrution and keeps chadabaji/shontrash in check, the masses won’t give a rat’s ass about anything else.

I second Tonomoy’s opinion, BNP’s only motto of “desh bachao – from India” same old scare/religion politics was a major cause for their downfall. People are no longer fooled by such silly tactics.
If instead they would now play a constructive role in politics maybe that will lead them back to power in 5 yrs time.

The great news is, this divisive nonsense was roundly defeated by the Bangladeshi people, and just as in America, it really seems like it can be put to rest and a new political culture possible.

Let’s hope similar winds blow in the direction of other parts of the world with upcoming elections (eg India …)

Gone are the days that BNP will invoke India -Subordinating image of AL and the mass will blindly act accordingly. Politics in Bangladesh has become more substance based – thanks to media – as people how to judge and distinguish black from white. Not only that, I had reports that ordinary people – whom the BNP alliance tried to buy in the end took the money but voted for AL in the end – a unique incidence where people fooled the party. Tonmoy’s comment is hard hitting and to the point. I totally agree: If you stabilize economy, create jobs and increase real income for the rural people and combat corruption and chadabaji – thats it – you are the winner. Also, its time for us to become rational; India is fast growing country and we must continue to allign our policies with her so that we can also grow with our biggest trading partner. Lossely speaking, a continous growth in excess of 7 percent per annum for the next 5 years can do all the magic.
