Pleasantly surprised to see a post on it as soon as I posted that there should be a discussion on it. Thank you.
It’s high time AL takes control of the reign. I thought they had a very good startt but this will tarnish all the good job done of not controlled soon.

Interestingly, BCL didn’t have any strong role in the movement against many issues during 4 party rule, neither did it play any role when Sk. Hasina was arrested. This govt. shouldn’t waste a single minute to stop this menace. I think this entire gamut of student politics and hall occupation is related to crores of extortion money that goes to student leaders when a regime is changed. I wonder what AL has achieved by bringing in young and regular students into the leadership of BCL in its last convention. The result is the same as before.

BNP street protest, for right or wrong reasons, will start from the campus. Understandably, SH and AL will naturally be afraid to shake up Chattro League’s structure. However, such events are not going to happen in a year or so. AL will have plenty of time to reorganize with popular student leaders and base their strength on ‘students’ not career criminals. AL’s own Matia in 65 and Selim in 73 showed that regular students can be enough to jolt any darkness.
If there is any, this is the moment. SH is riding the peak of the popularity wave. She might be able to withstand loosing the support (and in occasion vehement opposition) of musclemen and followers in the educational institute for a while; with a bit of luck on her side, may be able to clean up educational institutes for ever and give us back the historical, glorious student vanguards. Personally, if SH goes down trying to dismantle criminal gangs in student politics, I will forget all the past and revere her with the greatest sons and daughters of our land.

There is only one issue that can bring the entire success of this election down, and that is:
delayed action on “Student’ crime and mastani.

govt could issue advice to parents in this matter and invoke ideas of shame and humility.

This is the only burning question that Bangladesh Govt needs to answer. I am surprised to hear from an AL MP that we need student politics to develop future leaders in Bangladesh. I think this Moran does not know about outside of Bangladesh.
We in USA did not see any student politics for senators or congress or even for President, leaders of this country’s political parties did not do politics in their universities or colleges. Does USA have weak leaders compare to Bangladesh? This Moran AL MP is saying that we need to have student politics.
I am also agree that 2013 is not that far away. If they do not do anything good for the country, their fate will be like BNP now. I also believe educated and intelligent Bengali have to make noise in the air and keep these few Moran’s MPs in check and balance. AL is the only Party who can demolished student politics in Bangladesh now with their huge majority and power. Anything is possible by AL it’s either go down or go up.

“If they do not do anything good for the country, their fate will be like BNP now. ”

Do we want to wait and watch, to see if they do anything till 2013?
Or should we pray that “Allah’r wastay” she might have the wish to do it?
What action can we take in our “democracy” to make things happen??

upazila elections … ‘only one candidate killed so far’ says the NewAge. I wonder what the incentive is to vote against the national grain.

Dear Mr.M M Chowdhury,
Mithu Bi :: lovely write-up i agree with you 100% even abt the moron mp, both hope & pray SW Joy shud get on board with you, why not??? similar like you he must also well aware abt USA, being bereft of any student politics!
SW Joy in this instance MUST well realize silence is NOT golden but as Mithu Bi veritably stated, its a double edged sword which can bowl-out AL like BNP if reforms, especially pertaining to student politics is either ignored or weaned towards positive path of total elimination – in phases!!!
take care & do hv a great day!!!

Free press and will of people will force AL to take the right actions. Since, when there is no “student politics” in US? Please, don’t make the water muddy with wrong information. The nature of the Democratic Party and Republican Party is quite different in US campuses than that of BCL-JCL in Bangladesh. Same goes true at national level. Hence, it might not be a great idea to compare political mechanisms in US and BD. ‘Ban student politics’ is not going to work in BD. That is completely a different debate.
Let’s press for short-term realistic goals (exclude long term socio-economic goals):
1. From government’s side, take swift legal actions against every criminal act of BCL cadres from now on, only then, extend it against JCL and Shibir and others.
2. From people’s side, let’s keep on putting AL and BNP in shame for every criminal act committed by their student wings. Newspapers may reserve a corner on front page to do so. It might sound theatrical, but the future cost of tolerating Avi, Aurongo, Pinto, Liakat (astonishingly, some of them were students!) is too high for the nation.
3. EVERY single non-student should be removed from residential halls in shortest possible time and be arrested if there are any pending charges against those individuals. Authorize universities to terrorize the terrorists by giving access to appropriate law enforcing agencies. University will send press release, if any government/political official create any hindrance in the process. SH should dictate that in clear terms to all the VCs and Principals.
4. Force every school run their seat distribution policies fairly, and boost their ability to do so fearlessly.
5. Make sure government contracts in and around the universities are not influenced by so called “student leaders”. Provide protection to contractors at the highest level. If you know little bit about the student politics, this is the breeding ground of criminals who hijacked the student politics from students. Cut the life line of “Chandabazi”, they will die dry.
Now, I am worrying about my demand #1. The farcical inquiry committees and their stupid findings will make it impossible to take some quick and decisive action. Anyone, a realistic transparent plan?

SUPPORT SHAKIB AND SOUMITRA
http://www.newagebd.com/2009/jan/30/front.html : BCL occupies 100 rooms
in 2 SUST halls
Two quotations from the news:
First: “Campus sources said supporters of the Raju-Asad and Atiq-Suman groups of the BCL, the student wing of the Awami League, occupied the rooms in Shah Paran Hall and the second Student Hall after breaking the doors’ locks at about 12:00am on Wednesday.”
Second: “Leaders of the Shakib and Soumitra groups of the BCL have described the occupation of the dormitory rooms as ‘unethical and anarchic’.
They claimed that the BCL will not bear any responsibility for such anti-organisational activities which were strictly forbidden by the BCL’s central committee’s leaders, said sources in the groups.”
Can we, the public, make this flickering flame into a Bonfire? It has to start somewhere, let it be Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

Contours of Zafar Iqbal’s possible answer to Fug:
“The other day, a little boy wrote a letter to me. He asked, [insert generic question about primary school.] The letter brough tears to my eyes. Here we are thinking about universities and big buildings, and this little boy can not even get a good answer about his school. I do not understand politics very well. I used to read the newspapers and become happy, but nowadays, I just become confused. Yet, I believe in the dream. [Insert appropriate platitudes.] And I await that day of happiness with bated breath.”
