The BDR mutiny is over ( at least in Dhaka). the best case scenerio seems to have happened..
1. BDR surrendered to political ladership
2. Political leadership took control and ran the negotiation. even ex military men were not visible.
3. Army action was also allowed to take place. But with minimum risk of casuality..

Boishakhi TV shows footage of Rajshahi BDR HQ where the same scene as yesterday is playing out. BDR in either Srimongol or Syhlet HQ have taken up positions for around 4 km out of their HQ. I’m getting some independent confirmation on situation in Brahmanbaria where the same is supposed to be happening. In all these places, BDR is using mics to warn the gneral populace to stay away. What’s happened is that a lot of their commanding officers were in Dhaka for Rifles week and with news going back that they might be dead, chain of command is effectively broken.
NTV reports that BDR has removed arms from gate 3 after PM’s speech.
2.35pm
Hasina’s speech just concluded. Carrot and stick. Don’t remember direct quotes, but here are the highlights:
- aimed abt 70% towards BDR and 30% towards army. Says she understands the losses of loved ones, so understands the pain of yesterday. Says, “revenge is not the way”.
- carrot and stick – says her govt. has tried negotiations, but she is prepared to take any steps for the national interest. Says more than halfway thorugh the speech and then again near the end. “My duty towards my people” kinda rhetoric. “I have come here today with a gun and an olive branch” kind of logic, putting the onus for anything to follow strictly on the BDR.
- formation of high-powered committee to look into BDR grievances

- PM to Address soon (no time given)
- There are reports of rank and file soldiers seizing control of their barracks and camps in at least 12 different towns and cities since early on Thursday.
- The Bangladesh Rifles or BDR has 45,000 men stationed at 42 camps across the country.
In some cases, the border guards have taken their officers hostage, and in others they have forced them to leave, reports say.
Some mutineers told the BBC that they had taken up arms over fears that regular army units had been ordered to disarm them.
There are unconfirmed reports of gunfire in the main port city of Chittagong, at Feni, on the eastern border with India, in Rajshahi in the north west, and Sylhet in the north.
A man claiming to be a BDR soldier in Chittagong said they had opened fire to prevent regular army units from entering their camp, unconfirmed reports say.
Another report said similar incidents had occurred at Cox’s Bazaar and Feni.
In Khulna in the south, border guards have reportedly blocked a road, but no shooting has taken place.
The police chief in the north-eastern Moulivibazar district told the AFP news agency that the border guards were “firing indiscriminately”.
“Their commanding officer told me that he has fled the camp.”

Trouble spreads to paramilitary BDR camps across Bangladesh
DHAKA, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Trouble reportedly broke out at paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) camps across the country Thursday morning after thousands of BDR soldier staged revolt against their officers deputed from Bangladeshi Army at BDR headquarters in capital Dhaka Wednesday morning, private news agency UNB reported.
In southeastern Feni town, residents close to BDR camp heard sounds of bullets on Thursday morning. Local sources said they heard sounds of bullets and also saw smoke coming out of the camp at about 8:30 a.m.
Panicked residents started leaving the area after hearing the gunshots.
In southwestern Satkhira town, firing began at BDR camp at 10:30 a.m. BDR personnel took position on nearby highway, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Students of Rifles School inside the BDR camp area and the adjoining Textile Mills School have been confined in their schools following firing incident, creating panic among the guardians.
In northwestern Naogaon town, sounds of gunshot were heard from BDR camp Thursday morning creating panic among the local residents.
Local sources said BDR men got agitated and started firing following a rumor that army would come to capture the BDR camp.
In northeastern Sylhet city, tension escalated after sounds of gunshots coming out from BDR camp in the city on Thursday morning.
All educational institutions near the area remained close following the trouble that created panic among the city dwellers.
Besides, sounds of gunshot were also heard in BDR camps in northwestern Dinajpur, and Thakurgaon towns.

Mutiny spreads outside Dhaka, government-troopers begin talks
Dhaka, Feb 26 (IANS) Amid reports that the uprising by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troopers had spread beyond Dhaka, a government team here Thursday began talks with the mutineers who had a day earlier fought fierce battles with the army, killing at least 50 people.
Though the rebel troopers in Dhaka surrendered their arms after an amnesty offer by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday evening, there were reports that the border guards had begun fighting in other towns. “Fighting is raging outside the BDR camp, with troops coming on the street holding up guns and shooting,” Times Online quoted a witness as saying in Sylhet, in the northeast of the country.
Hasina Thursday met the three service chiefs and also held an emergency meeting of her cabinet and political colleagues. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Matia Choudhury and her team began the talks at 9 a.m., Star Online said. The surrender of arms by the BDR troopers began past 1 a.m. Thursday, but tension prevailed at the headquarters at Pilkhana on the outskirts of the national capital.
Gunshots were reportedly fired long after Hasina announced a general amnesty.
State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam said that the death toll was likely to be 50.
As many as 15,000 soldiers took part in the rebellion. The condition of many senior officers, including its BDR chief, Major General Shakil Ahmed, was not known.
Red Crescent Society officials at about 3 a.m. entered the headquarters to take out the women and children trapped inside as the mutinous troopers agreed to set them free. The troopers’ grievances relate to their pay packets and working conditions. There is also a sentiment against the army from where the top brass of the BDR is drawn.
A rebel trooper was quoted by New Age as saying: “Although the military officers receive 30 percent of their salary in special allowance for serving in the Bangladesh Rifles, we get a monthly allowance of Taka 260 ($38 approx.) for the same job. We run the same risks.”
The BDR trooper pointed out that in case of death on duty, compensation of only Taka 50,000-100,000 was paid. With border checkposts left unmanned and patrolling virtually abandoned by troopers who disarmed their officers at some places, neighbour India placed its Border Security Force (BSF) on full alert and monitored the developments closely.
Uncertainty prevailed in most outposts and camps as the army officials there felt shaky with troopers focusing on the situation in Dhaka without concentrating on their daily patrol, according to reports reaching Dhaka said.

How can an army backed BDR may become so uncontrolled if corruption wasnt at mass level? Isnt it the corruption of commanding officers tht had led the BDR to mutiny, to fall for chain of command? is that so.. than many of the army officers including gen muin and some of caretaker Govt must be taken account for such griveious incident through out the country..

At frst, when it was heard tht BDR DG was killed it also ridiculed ppl and no matter it came true later. People of 3 miles radius from the Bdr HQ are being evacuated. Reports ( Unofficial ) have arrived that mortars are being set up in the rooftops of houses directed towards BDR HQ ( mortars are kind of a long range artillery missile launcher ). Tanks are also reported to be seen entering the surrounding area. Something big is going to happen. I am pretty sure something is planned as the BDR jawans have surrendered their weapons so there should be no fear right? But the people are being asked to move away. So I just leave you all to judge out and watch the television.

Chandan, you got the wrong lesson. The lesson is — thank god there was a civilian government !! Otherwise this would have been a far greater mess than than the student uprising. This is why politicians with all their weaknesses are so vital for a country — for their people skill. AL leadership has superbly tackled this. With all the key leaders who are seasoned politicians, getting involved, it also shows the benefit of bench strength for REAL political party . The speech was fantastic and so were the handling of matia-sahara-azam-noor-tapash-nanak et al.

Asif, as a journalist working for the Daily Star, I was shocked by some of the reporting by our eletronic media over the past 36 hours. Many reports almost seemed to make heroes out of the mutineers. Many of the bloggers here also seemed to be talking about how the BDR were oppressed, rather than the black crime that this mutiny was. There was very little talk about the slain army officers – executed in a horrific manner – and their families.
This situation is a dark chapter in our country’s history. In a country like ours, there will be grievances. But you do not air those grievances by killing your superiors, and turning your guns on civilians.
I hope the ring leaders of this crime will now face their moment of reckoning. We must find out the root causes of this command failure. But above all, we must send the message that mutiny does not pay. Otherwise, there will never be rule of law in Bangladesh.
A mutiny is a crime that endangers the security of the nation. We should see it as such.

For Globetrotter and those who does not BELIEVE! that army did shoot BDR jawan first here is an eyewitness report of an Army senior officer narrated by his relative: (Contact this person or leave comments in his blog if you have questions)
http://www.somewhereinblog.net/blog/Imrozblog/28917046
It shows that first they were shot at then they took the injured jawan outside, came back with arms and shot the officers at podium. And the officer, who narrated this was helped by some jawans to escape. He is in good health.

My question to Globetrotter can BDR DG shoot or order to shoot an innocent person? Let this be a lesson for the arrogant armed forces personnel (I am sure they are only small minority) who abuses power.
Of course I support no immunity for the mutineers and they should be brought to justice too.
[Reply]
Rezwan, you do NOT get my point. What justification is there for the killing of the 50 army officers and the civilians? I refuse to be cheerleader of a mutiny. Its clear you dont like the army. But this is ridiculous. Almost 50 of our brave officers have been killed. Can we out of respect for the dead stop cheerleading for the mutineers?
[Reply]
Who is cheerleading? And who said I don’t like the army. Its some deranged officers we are talking about. BDR DG was corrupt and he had reasons for his actions.
I proved that Army did shoot first and thats why the situation escalated. If you read the statement you see those who well behaved with jawans were spared. Can we court marshal him if the BDR DG is alive because he shot an innocent person? Can army do just anything and you cannot say anything?
“Almost 50 of our brave officers have been killed” – Those who did this should pay. But we should not let this repeat again by refusing to recognize why it happened.
[Reply]
Rezwan, a simple question. Think of it in this way. You are an army officer sitting at the Darbar hall with the DG. For some reason there is an argument and a jawan is shot. Maybe the DG shot him (hypothetically). Would the jawans be justified in killing all the officers, including yourself?
I think you will get your answer.

Would you all please stop abusing us and pray for those souls for the time being…

[Reply]
I as a civilian would have restrained the DG before things are escalated and tried to calm the situation. and talk to those jawans that they should not do anything.
But what would I do as an army officer – you better tell since you know so much. It was clearly a break in the chain of command which was dealt with very unprofessionally. Why the soldiers were not heard for many times and situation escalated to a tipping point? I don’t have sympathies for the mutineers who took law in their own hands and blame those few officers whose actions took the lives of all those brilliant officers.
[Reply]
Tomorrow I will be interviewing one of the officers who escaped. I will then know for sure how the fight started. But i do know that army officers are not in the habit of shooting jawans. But even if the DG did something wrong, why were all the other officers killed? Many were tortured and shot at close range. Has our conscience gone to sleep?
There can be no justification for a mutiny. Period. If we cannot agree on that, God help us as a nation.
