My Sister’s Language

By Shahidul Alam

Kalpana, I failed you as a brother, when they abducted you. I failed you as a friend, when they killed your brothers Mantosh, Samar, Shukesh and Rupan. I fail you now as a citizen, when my military and my government burn your villages, murder your families, take away your land. I fail you all as a human being, when you are prevented from laying flowers at the Shahid Minar in your village home.

More Baghaihat homes torched

Fri, Mar 5th, 2010 1:48 am BdST

Khagrachhari, Mar 5 (bdnews24.com)—Arsonists on Thursday torched four indigenous homes and a school run by UNICEF in the troubled Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati hill district.

Rangamati deputy commissioner Surendranath Chakrabarty told bdnews24 that Baghaichari upazila nirbahi officer was sent to the spot at Dainevaiva Chara in Baghaihat.

The incident comes just two weeks after violent clashes over land disputes between hill people and Bengali settlers in the same remote area of Baghaihat, during which entire villages were set alight and at least two people killed.

A local teacher Anchika Chakma told bdnews24.com the homes of Kina Chan Chakma, Baika Chakma, Bidyasadan Tripura and Doyal Krishna were set alight around 9pm on Thursday.

Pilkhana – one year on

Photo: The daily star

Shaheen Islam, a UV regular who was born and raised in Dhaka, wrote this in today’s Daily Star.

AN unexpected burst of violence engulfed Dhaka a year ago. Of all the events in the past decade that have caused collective grief to this city and damaged its social fabric — serial bomb blasts, violent strikes, logi-boitha, the Dhaka University student-military face-off — this was the worst. Make no mistake about that.

I will not — I emphasise, not — attempt to explore the root causes, deep conspiracies and national/international forces behind the BDR mutiny. Nor will I discuss the question that has joined the other great what ifs in our history: whether negotiations on the first day, instead of the military solution, were a mistake or not. I am sure the discerning reader will find enough in the media about those. Rather, even though it still feels too early to do anything other than grieve the 57 army officers and 18 civilians who died, I want to use this anniversary to think a bit about what it means to be safe in this city of ours.

An earlier version of this is over the fold. Read more…

CHT: This Land Is Our Land (Farah Mehreen)

Farah Mehreen Ahmad’s op-ed on CHT: “To burst this greedy and exploitative bubble of fantasy traits attributed to those who are forced to be third-class citizens for our needs and convenience, as if their sole purpose is to serve us – the Raj… To not pervert “majority rule” to mean the rule of a power-tripping, vile and nonchalant majority, but the rule of a conscientious majority.”

Feb 24, 1:14 PM: Email from Shireen Huq: “Update from our contact 15 minutes ago – although the curfew has officially lifted at 7am, the situation remains extremely tense with nothing moving in the streets. Our friends are feeling insecure. They have news that nearly 80 hill people (including from villages) and a few Bangalis were arrested yesterday. Journalists and observers from outside Khagrachari have been targeted by the law enforcement agencies. Representative from SHED is in hiding as are many others. Our friends are concerned that the media is projecting the violence as a simple Bangali-Pahari conflict when in fact the situation has been manipulated by disgruntled AL politicians and local BNP politicians who have joined forces. Their appeal to all of us who are residing in relative safety outside the Chittagong Hill Tracts is to use whatever channels and contacts to urge the government to restore peace and safety for the people of Khagrachari and Rangamati.”

CHT: Whose Ekushey, Whose Blood?

Whose Ekushey, Whose Blood?
Daily Star, February 22, 2010
Naeem Mohaiemen

I was getting myself into the spirit of Amar Ekushey. Bangalis of the neo-consumerist age, our best stories are coming from colorful ads on TV. I whirled through all the channels, to catch the cream, the best ones on constant repeat. Oh look, a white girl in a sari, standing in front of Shahid Minar. The camera pans back and it’s a pseudo-UN congregation on the steps. We are the World. I switch over and there’s a gorgeous restaging of all the classics of Bangla literature: Satyajit, Rabindranath, and…cut to Shahid Minar. Ekushey in the era of “Brand Bangladesh.” Phenomenon of cultural marketing and ad agencies.
