Climate Change– It’s here, It’s Now and It’s Happening!

When we talk about climate change and think about it as some theoretical prospect of the future, it’s not. It’s here, it’s now, its facing these people in their daily lives.

Ed Miliband MP, Climate Secretary, to Sky News

As the world gears up for the UN’s climate change conference to be held in Copenhagen in December, many journalists, documentary makers, researchers and photographers have been dispatched to our part of the world to see for themselves what climate change is all about. Having had the good fortune or misfortune, depending on which way you’re looking at it, of working with some of these climate change enthusiasts, has made me realize, for the first time, how big Bangladesh’s climate change issue really is and how we, Bangladeshis, are almost completely oblivious to it! Also, how little we know about this.

Just a few hard facts first, the third or fourth assessment of the IPCC  report claims that by 2050, we will lose 17% of Bangladesh and 20 million will be displaced. 4:27:   Now the tricky part.  What to do with them?  There are 3300 of them. The following image from a TV grab of Munni Saha interview  is the highlight of the media coverage.

4:10: around 50 dead inside the BDR HQ.  Taposh taking two buses inside to get the families out.  Army is kept out carefully.  Politicians and police chief involved only.

3:10:  The officers’ families are getting out through  Police ambulance.  Shahara Khatun went in with a lot of confidence saying that he is going to get them to surrender.  Looks like she has done it.

3:07: Prothom Alo now confirms that BDR DG is dead.  15 killed.

3:05: The jawans have started surrendering arms to Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun – Channel I

2:55:  Bangladesh TV cameraman has been called inside the BDR compound.  All lights have been turned off inside the cantonment.  Munni Saha thinks the process of surrender has started.

2:10: There are clearly two school of thoughts among blog visitors.  Sensible view from sensible.

2:06: Taposh says it clearly that there are many factions inside with everyone having their own opinion. All firings have now stopped.

2:05: Fazle Nur Taposh, Sahara Khatun, chief of Police they are all inside BDR compound.  Methinks Taposh should be face of the government talking to media in this matter.  He was calm, assuring and to the point.  Well done.

1:21: Rumi bhai chimes to bring in sense to us all and asks the government to crush the mutiny first.

1:11: A rather personal and beautiful piece by a fellow DP-ite who is in Dhaka on a project

1:10: Lively debate on the comment section on whether there should be a pardon or not.  People need to understand that the first focus should be to diffuse the tension without further bloodshed now.  Court martial et al, will happen later, I have no doubt.

1:00:  Some pictures are very graphic.  Viewers discretion advised.  Pictures from today up at FocusBangla
